York City 1 - 0 Corby Town (A)
Corby Town may be out of this years FA Trophy but what a performance they put up at Bootham Crescent yesterday.
York, unbeaten at home, who play on a pitch best described as a desert, were shocked by the quality of the Corby team who first of all quietend the 2,198 gate and then in the second half made the Blue Square Premier side look very ordinary.
The problem was York had been gifted a disputed penalty in the 40th minute when Michael Gash's shot hit Dave Deeney on the arm at short range and Andy Ferrell converted the kick.
In the second half Corby became a great deal more adventurous and efforts from Leon Hibbert,(our Man of the Match) Jason Lee, Dave Deeney, Tommy Jaszczun, and Brett Solkhon all had efforts that had Corby fans out of their seats thinking they has scored the equailiser, but it wasn't to be.
A Herculean effort from the Steelmen in the end gained no reward but showed there is not that much difference between the sides in the two leagues. If only the Steelmen can be successful in making the play-offs this season.
A poignant gesture also saw representatives from both sets of supporters lay down wreaths in the memory of Corby-born, former York striker David Longhurst during the half-time interval as fans on both sides broke into spontaneous applause.
Longhurst collapsed and died during a York home game against Lincoln in 1990.
