CORBY TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB | FIXTURE INFORMATION

Alfreton Town 1 - 2 Corby Town (A)

Conditions at Alfreton last night made last Saturdays wind and rainswept game at the Rockingham Triangle seem like a Florida walk in the park.

It was just about playable and all credit to both teams who served up an absolute cracker of a match.

For ninety minutes both teams slugged it out in atrocious conditions with no quarter given.

Extra time always looked on the cards.

Even then it needed something special to break the deadlock and it was substitute Jamie McGhee who provided it after 97 minutes by going on a solo run taking on a bewildered Alferton defence.

His run took him into the box and his shot was deflected into the goal by Alfreton defender Matt Wilson who was on the one hand trying to clear the ball and on the other trying to stop it reaching Leon Mettam.

Alfreton were by no means fazed by the goal and hit back hard with Mark Osborn outstanding in the Corby goal.

Early in the second period of extra time Alfreton will feel they got the goal they deserved when a defensive mix-up let in Paul Clayton who gleefully equalised.

With four minutes remaining before the expected penalty shoot out Corby produced perhaps the best bit of controlled quality football seen all night.

Steve Diggin took the ball into the corner chased by an Alfreton defender. There didn't look enough room for Diggin to cross the ball but somehow he dug it out and got his right foot around it.

The cross was controlled first time by Leon Mettam who stood 16 yards out, he cooly brought the ball down and rifled it into the top of the net for his glorious twelth of the season.

Alfreton had no reply and Corby from then on looked the more likely to add to the score.

Graham Drury would have rightly been proud of everyone of his players last night.

If he could just get them to produce at home 50% of what they showed last night then the Rockingham Triangle would be full to the rafters every week.

Every Corby Town player deserved a medal for his determination and commitment to the cause.

With Alfreton out of the way we can now look forward to a FA Trophy First Round Proper home tie with Farsley Celtic on Saturday December 12th kick off 3.00pm.

Before that though we have to prepare for Southport and Vauxhall Motors away and Telford at home on Wednesday December 9th kick off 7.45pm.
